Department of General, Visceral and Thoracic Surgery

Department of General, Visceral and Thoracic Surgery at University Hospital Hamburg-Eppendorf provides surgical care for diseases of the thoracic and abdominal cavity organs as well as the vascular system. The department is established as one of the top facilities in Germany in the field of bowel cancer treatment by FOCUS Magazine. The department is concerned with endocrinal gland disorders, obesity, diseases and tumors of the gastrointestinal tract, lung, and thoracic cavity. Under the guidance of Prof. Dr. Med. Jakob Izbicki, the department performs nearly 2,600 inpatient and 3,000 outpatient surgical procedures annually. 
The department of General, Visceral and Thoracic Surgery at University Hospital Hamburg-Eppendorf has an impressive team of surgeons, therapists and nursing staff members that ensure the best quality care for patients. Many of the surgeons have outstanding experience in the field of pancreatic and esophageal cancer. The department is in cooperation with departments of Anesthesiology and Intensive Care, Radiology, Endoscopy, and Internal Medicine, which helps to provide a custom-made management plan for each patient. It’s one of the few superregional centers for Pancreatic, Stomach and Esophageal Surgery as well as one of the biggest Obesity Centers in Germany. 
The research unit of this department is mainly focused on cancer of the abdominal cavity and thorax, diseases of the pancreas and the enhancement of minimally invasive surgeries. It’s known for its HIPEC operations where surgical interventions combined with chemotherapy is carried out at the same time. This method is reported to reduce the time of treatment and improve prognosis.
