Department of Neurology at University Hospital Carl Gustav Carus Dresden provides care for patients with neurological and neuromuscular diseases. The FOCUS Magazine has recognized the department as one of the best medical institutions in Germany for the management of Parkison’s disease, multiple sclerosis, and Alzheimer's disease. The main focuses of the department are circulatory disorders such as stroke, multiple sclerosis, and epilepsy and degenerative diseases such as Parkinson’s disease and cerebellar disorders. The department cooperates with the Department of Neurosurgery which allows performing surgery for the treatment of epilepsy, parkinsonism and other neurological disorders that can benefit from surgical interventions.
Under the guidance of Prof. Dr. Med. Heinz Reichmann, the department treats more than 2,700 inpatients every year. The department also consists of an intensive care unit for critical diseases such as cerebral hemorrhage, meningitis, and stroke and a research unit which is conducting research projects on motor diseases, neuroendocrine tumors, mitochondrial diseases, and neuro-AIDS.
