Department of Nephrology at University Hospital Carl Gustav Carus Dresden provides care for patients with congenital and acquired diseases of the kidneys. The main focuses of the department are inflammatory and vascular kidney diseases along with renal-induced arterial hypertension. The department takes pride in its kidney replacement therapy as it offers kidney transplantations and all types of renal dialysis, such as hemodialysis, hemodiafiltration, hemofiltration, and peritoneal dialysis.
Under the guidance of Prof. Dr. Med. Christian Hugo, the department performs more than 20,000 dialysis and 200 plasma exchange procedures every year. The research unit of the department conducts both basic and clinical research projects which are mainly focused on kidney transplantations and immunosuppressive drugs prescribed afterward. The department also offers care for patients with terminal stages of chronic renal insufficiency.
