Department of Cardiology, Pneumology, Intensive Care Medicine, and Endocrinology at University Hospital Augsburg offers comprehensive care of the highest level for patients with diseases of the heart, lungs, and endocrine glands for about 6000 inpatients every year. The clinic is the second largest provider for acute heart attack care in Bavaria as well as a founding member of the Bavarian Heart Attack Networks. Under the leadership of Prof. Dr. Wolfgang von Scheidt, the cardiology department works in close cooperation the Clinic for Cardiac and Thoracic Surgery, Pediatric Cardiology, and Cardiac Anesthesia within the certified Heart Center Augsburg-Swabia, where about 3,000 cardiac catheter examinations, 1,250 coronary interventions, and 269 catheter-assisted aortic valve implantations are performed and over 800 heart attack patients are treated.
The medical staff of the Pneumology unit offers the full range of therapeutics, including surgical procedures through the cooperation with the Department of Thoracic Surgery within the Interdisciplinary Cancer Center Augsburg (ICCA). In 2014, the unit worked together with the Departments of Thoracic Surgery, Oncology, and Radiation Therapy to establish the Lung Cancer Center which is now certified by the German Cancer Center and treats about 150 lung cancer patients annually. The Endocrinology and Metabolism unit has achieved impressive results for the diagnosis and treatment of refractory hypertension and complex fat metabolism disorders.
