Department of Pediatric Hematology and Oncology
Department of Pediatric Cardiac Surgery at University Hospital Muenster offers medical care for children and adolescents with blood diseases and tumors. The department is considered as one of the biggest medical institutions for pediatric hematology and oncology in Germany. It is certified by the German Cancer Society for its efforts in the field of pediatric oncology and takes part with the Society of Pediatric Oncology and Hematology in researches on the improvement of treatment of tumors and blood diseases like researches on non-Hodgkin lymphoma and Ewing’s sarcoma. Clinical trials are also conducted in the department to develop new therapeutics for cancer. Psychological support is offered for children with cancer as it is established that cancer has a depressing effect on the patient.
Under the guidance of Prof. Dr. med. Claudia Rössig, the department treats more than 1,200 inpatients and 15,000 outpatients every year. A special feature of the department is stem cell transplantation which is offered for patients with leukemia, metabolic disorders, immunodeficiency, and bone marrow failure.
