Department of General, Visceral and Transplant Surgery at University Hospital Muenster provides the general and abdominal surgical care needed by patients. The department is one of the best medical institutions in Germany in the field of bowel cancer treatment. One of the main focuses of the department is the treatment of abdominal, gastrointestinal, hepatic and pancreatic tumors. The department is certified by the German Cancer Society and is also established as a Center of Excellence in the field of pancreatic surgery. The department also stands out in the field of the small bowel and rectal surgery and performs more than 200 of these operations every year. The department is one of the few surgery centers in Germany that offers the advanced HIPEC technique of peritoneal cancer treatment.

With Prof. Dr. med. Andreas Pascher as the head of the department, more than 1,620 inpatients are treated there every year. The department takes pride in its robotic and minimally invasive surgery records as well as its hybrid techniques. A special feature of the department is its transplantation unit. It is considered to be one of the biggest centers of its kind in Germany. More than 2,500 kidney, 300 liver, 50 pancreatic and 4 small intestine transplantation has been performed in the department so far.
