Department of Gastroenterology and Hepatology

Department of Gastroenterology and Hepatology at University Hospital Muenster provide medical care for patients with diseases affecting their gastrointestinal tract, liver, biliary system, pancreas, and endocrinal glands. The department has a special focus directed towards diabetes mellitus as well as hepatic failure. The department is recognized as a reference center in Germany. Under the guidance of Prof. Dr. med. Hartmut Schmidt, the department treats more than 2,500 inpatients every year, nearly 200 of which suffer from hepatic cirrhosis. The department has a qualified medical staff that uses the latest diagnostics and therapeutics to ensure that each patient get the best management plan designed specifically for them.
The department offers transplantation of the liver, pancreas, and intestines in cases of organ failure. The infection center of the department has 15 vacancies where patients with infectious diseases and blood poisoning are treated. There are 5 isolation rooms for diseases such as chickenpox and tuberculosis. One of the main focuses of the department is HIV and AIDS patients as well as sexually-transmitted diseases. The research unit of the department is recognized for its great contribution in the field of clinical and experimental research. The main interests of the team are inflammatory bowel diseases, diabetes mellitus, and transplantation medicine.
