Department of Visceral, Thoracic and Vascular Surgery at University Hospital of Giessen and Marburg provides care for patients with diseases of the intestines, glands, lungs, abdominal wall, and blood vessels. The department is recognized as one of the top facilities in Germany by FOCUS Magazine as it has a high rate of success for transplantation surgeries in its specialized transplantation clinic. For its impressive results and achievements, the German Cancer Society has certified the facility as a Bowel Cancer, a Pancreatic Cancer, and Stomach Cancer Center. The medical staff has an experienced team of surgeons specialized in endocrine surgery for the treatment of thyroid, parathyroid, thymus, adrenal, and pancreatic diseases. Due to the excellent surgeons and state-of-the-art equipment, the department offers the latest surgical techniques as well as complex procedures for certain diseases.
For example, for the treatment of kidney and respiratory failure, kidney and both unilateral and bilateral lung transplants are available. While for the treatment of diseases of the digestive tract and organs, natural orifice transluminal endoscopic surgery can be carried out. Under the guidance of Prof. Dr. Med. Winfried Padberg, the department treats nearly 3,000 inpatients every year, including advanced stages of colon and ovarian cancers that require surgical interventions combined with hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy as the facility is involved in the Center for Hyperthermic Intraperitoneal Chemotherapy (HIPEC).
