Department of Pediatric Cardiology

Department of Pediatric Cardiology at University Hospital of Giessen and Marburg provides care for infants, children, and adolescents with congenital and acquired cardiovascular diseases. The department is a supra-regional Congenital Heart Disease Center where congenital heart defects are treated by open surgery and electrophysiological therapy. The department also offers heart transplantation as the first heart transplantation surgery was carried out in 1988 and ever since, the department has performed 75 heart transplants, a range of 8 surgeries annually. The department is a pioneer in Europe in the area of fetal heart transplantation.
Under the guidance of Prof. Dr. Med. Christian Jux, the medical staff performs over 500 operations in the two operating rooms and treats about 8,000 patients every year. The department has state-of-the-art equipment such as the 3 Tesla MRI that conducts over 800 examinations annually and a cardiac catheterization laboratory where more than 600 procedures are performed.
