Department of Cardiac, Thoracic, and Vascular Surgery at University Hospital of Giessen and Marburg provides surgical care for patients with diseases of the heart, lung, and blood vessels. According to FOCUS Magazine, the department is one of the best medical facilities in Germany as it directs special attention to the treatment of coronary heart diseases, valvular heart diseases, and cardiac arrhythmias and also works in cooperation with cardiologists from Marburg and various hospitals in Hesse and all over Germany.
Under the leadership of Prof. Dr. Med. Andreas Böning, the medical staff of physicians and surgeons, treats over 1,350 inpatients and performs more than 2,000 cardiac and vascular surgical interventions every year. As a member of the Heart Transplant Program, the specialized pediatric surgery unit carries out 650 operations and about 150 heart transplantation procedures for children and adolescents every year. The research unit is one of the pioneering scientific facilities of Germany as it contributes significantly to the latest scientific findings.
