Department of Neurosurgery

Department of Neurosurgery at University Hospital Schleswig-Holstein is the largest clinic in Schleswig-Holstein and one of the largest institutions in northern Germany that provide surgical care for patients with diseases of the central and peripheral nervous system. The German Society of Neurosurgery and the Society for Skull Base Surgery have recognized the department as a maximum care neurosurgical center as it treats 2,500 inpatients every year.
The clinic consists of three wards with a bed capacity of 60 beds, equipped to help the treatment of neurological disorders along with the exceptional medical team of neurosurgeons, neurologists, and specialized nurses. The facility achieved excellent results in the fields of nervous system tumors, vascular diseases, degenerative spinal disorders, malformations of the nervous system, peripheral nerve diseases, and neuro traumatology.
Under the guidance of Prof. Dr. med. Michael Synowitz, surgeons of the department perform 2,000 operations every year in the state-of-the-art operating theaters. The research unit is engaged in many research projects regarding neurooncology, deep brain stimulation in movement disorders as well as fusion techniques for spinal discs diseases.
