Department of Gastroenterology, Endocrinology, Rheumatology, Infectiology, and Nutritional Medicine at University Hospital Schleswig-Holstein provides the full range of care for patients with diseases of the digestive tract, liver, pancreas, lungs, and endocrine glands, including rheumatological, nutritional, and infectious diseases. Specialists of the geriatric medicine unit work together to develop a tailor-made management plan for patients above 65 years old, including early rehabilitation, treatment of internal pathologies and tumors, and palliative medicine. FOCUS Magazine has recognized the facility as one of the best departments for Endocrinology, Diabetology, and Clinical Nutritional Medicine in Germany as it has also earned the title a Reference Center for Obesity Surgery. The main focus in this field is directed towards obesity medicine, lipidology, osteology as well as the treatment of neuroendocrine tumors.
The Inflammatory Medicine and Rheumatology units work in close cooperation with the Departments of Nephrology, Ophthalmology, Neurology, Tooth Preservation, and Otolaryngology as many rheumatological and inflammatory diseases affect more than one organ at a time. Under the guidance of Prof. Dr. med. Stefan Schreiber, the department follows the latest national and international standards for patient care and has been certified by the German Society of Visceral Oncology as a Pancreatic Cancer Center, Liver Cancer Center, Colon Cancer Center, Lung Cancer Center, and a general Oncology Center. The department performs over 13,000 diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopies as well as treats over 5,600 inpatients every year of all age groups as it works in close cooperation with the Department of Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine.
