Department of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery at the University Hospital Saarland provides care for all patients with lung, heart and cardiovascular conditions requiring surgical intervention regardless of their severity. This department was founded 40 years ago and is one of the few clinics in Germany performing complex procedures like multiple heart valve replacement. The spectrum of conditions the department treats includes almost all diseases of the adult and pediatric cardiac, thoracic and cardiovascular system requiring surgical intervention.
Under the guidance of Prof. Dr. Med. Hans-Joachim Schäfers, the department treats more than 1,000 inpatients and performs on an average 1,400 operations a year. The department is highly specialized in the treatment of aortic and mitral valve repair and replacement. Highly experienced surgeons and staff with state-of-the-art medical equipment ensure optimal care for each patient.
