Department of Internal Medicine V - Pulmonology, Allergology, Respiratory and Environmental Medicine at the University Hospital Saarland offers care in the form of diagnosis and treatment for patients with conditions related to the allergic and sleep disorders.
Under the guidance of Prof. Dr. med. Robert Bals, the department treats more than 3,000 inpatients ever year. Highly experienced doctors and staff with state-of-the-art medical equipment ensure optimal care for patients. It has its resources focused on lung cancer, respiratory failure, and pneumonia. The department has 78 beds and specialized care units for cystic fibrosis, pulmonary hypertension, pulmonary fibrosis, and alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency.
More than 1,000 patients with lung cancer are treated in this department annually. In 2017, Lung Cancer Center was opened where edge-cutting diagnostics and therapeutics are used to come up with the best outcome of lung cancer. The therapy plan is tailor-developed for each patient according to the aspects of their condition. The department has an impressive record in the treatment of sleeping disorders. Their modern Sleep Laboratory diagnoses and treats sleep apnea, excessive sleepiness, sleeping sickness, and other sleeping disorders.
