Department of Ophthalmology at University Hospital RWTH Aachen provides care for patients with conditions affecting the eye. The department has the edge-cutting diagnostics and therapeutics to ensure the patients get the best medical service. Under the guidance of Prof. Dr. med. Peter Walter, about 2,300 inpatients are treated in the department every year, about 400 of which suffer from retinal detachment. The department has their care classified into care for posterior eye segment and anterior eye segment diseases. Orthopedics, neuro-ophthalmology and pediatric ophthalmology are also areas that the department offers specialized care for.
The department consists of a special Eye bank which allows them to perform over 50 corneal transplantations and over 500 intraocular lens implantations every year.
