Department of Cardiology, Angiology, and Internal Intensive Care Medicine (Internal Medicine I) at University Hospital RWTH Aachen provides care for patients with cardiovascular defects and disorders. It was recognized by FOCUS Magazine as one of the best medical facilities of its kind in Germany. The department has coronary heart diseases, heart failure, arrhythmia and hypertension as its main concerns. The department is divided into several sections, each one is supplied with the most advanced diagnostics and therapeutics for a certain cardiovascular category to ensure the best care quality for patients.
Under the leadership of Prof. Dr. med. Nikolaus Marx, the department treats more than 5,300 inpatients every year. About 1,000 patients treated suffer from angina and more than 650 suffer from a heart attack. The research team of this department has its activities directed towards the mechanism of calcification in cardiovascular diseases and the association between diabetes mellitus and cardiovascular disorders.
