Department of Otolaryngology

Department of Otolaryngology (ENT) at University Hospital Jena provides care for patients with diseases of the ear, nose, and throat as well as oncological diseases of the head and neck. The department offers care for hearing impairment patients by providing them the latest cochlear implantation techniques for which it has earned a great reputation during its 120 years of medical care, especially in children. It is well-known for its many successful cochlear implants as well as rehabilitation in the form of adaptation of speech processes.
The department consists of 48 beds and 3 advanced operating theaters where over 3,500 patients are treated under the guidance of Prof. Dr. Med. Orlando Guntinas-Lichius, 300 of which are tonsillitis patients. The department is also a certified Head and Neck Cancer Center by the German Cancer Aid and it has a pediatric unit where young children with otitis, polyps, adenoids, and cleft palate are treated with special care and psychological support.

  • 1994 Doctoral thesis defense with honors (title of Dr. med.), Faculty of Medicine, University of Cologne. Subject: "Hypoglossal-facial nerve anastomosis in a rat".
