Department of General, Visceral and Vascular Surgery at University Hospital Jena provides care for patients with abdominal and vascular diseases requiring surgical interventions. It is certified by the German Cancer Society as a liver and visceral oncological center as it directs a special focus towards the early diagnosis and treatment of tumors of respective organs. The department works in close cooperation with other departments such as the department of gastroenterology, oncology, radiation therapy, and radiology to ensure the patient gets optimal care. The department is also recognized by FOCUS Magazine as one of the best institutes in Germany to treat bowel cancer.
Under the guidance of Prof. Dr. Med. Utz Settmacher, the department treats more than 3,300 inpatients every year, many of which are diagnosed with atherosclerosis. A special feature of the department is its therapeutic transplantation option which is done on both a solitary and multi-visceral transplant basis. The department is one of the best facilities in Germany to provide liver transplantations and also emphasizes its focus on vascular diseases and provides the latest techniques such as open and endovascular surgeries. The medical team of this unit works in collaboration with the departments of angiology, radiology, neurology, and nephrology to formulate and provide an individual treatment plan to each of their patients.
