Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery

Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery at University Hospital Jena provides care for patients with cardiovascular and pulmonary diseases requiring surgical interventions. Special attention of the department is directed towards minimally invasive surgery, coronary artery bypass grafting, and cardiothoracic surgeries with da Vinci surgical system. The department takes pride in its video-assisted thoracic surgical interventions and has been recognized as one of the best centers in Germany in its specialty, according to FOCUS Magazine.
Under the guidance of Prof. Dr. Med. Torsten Doenst, the department treats more than 1,600 inpatients every year. The research unit of the department is divided into basic research, experimental heart surgery, clinical epidemiology, and clinical studies. The research unit is currently running a research project on cardiac metabolism in cardiac hypertrophy and failure and its relation to insulin resistance.
