Department of Cardiology, Angiology, and Pulmonology

Department of Cardiology, Angiology, and Pulmonology at University Hospital Jena provides care for patients with diseases of the heart, blood vessels, and lungs. It consists of general wards with 125 beds and an intensive care unit with 23 beds making it one of its kind in Thuringia and one of the largest facilities of its specialty in Germany. The department works according to DIN EN ISO 900 and offers the most advanced diagnostics and therapeutics for cardiovascular and pulmonary diseases including cardiac catheterization and electrophysiological therapy. It is also fully equipped to deal with patients with critical conditions such as cardiogenic shock, liver failure, kidney failure, and internal bleeding. The pulmonology unit of the department offers the diagnostics, invasive and non-invasive therapeutics for obstructive, inflammatory, autoimmune, and interstitial lung diseases as well as tumors of the lung.
Under the guidance of Prof. Dr. Med. Christian Schulze, the department treats more than 6,000 inpatients and 30,000 outpatients annually making it one of the biggest facilities for cardiovascular and pulmonary disease treatment in Germany. It has 4 cardiac catheterization laboratories where the full range of cardiac surgical interventions are performed, including ones that require hybrid surgery and electrophysiological examinations. As for the area of angiology, the department has its main focus on atherosclerosis. Minimally invasive procedures in thrombotic diseases are the current focus as it increases the chances of success and decreases the risk of complications.
