Department of Thoracic Surgery at Helios Hospital Berlin-Zehlendorf is concerned with the surgical treatment of patients with diseases of the lung and the chest wall. Under the guidance of Prof. Dr. med. Joachim Pfannschmidt, the main focus is directed towards the treatment of lung cancer and minimally invasive interventions as it works in close cooperation with the Lung Clinic Heckeshorn and the Local Clinic for Pneumology in the Lung Cancer Center, a certified center by the German Cancer Society. The facility, as well as the Lung Cancer Center, is fully-equipped with the latest surgical necessities to perform successful procedures. Station 34 is a surgical station that has 38 beds where patients are looked after around the clock, before and after surgical interventions.
The Department of Thoracic Surgery at Helios Hospital Berlin-Zehlendorf is specialized in:

- 1995-1999: Senior doctor at the Department of Visceral, Thorax and Vascular Surgery at the ZKH Reinkenheide / Bremerhaven
- 1999-2017: Assistant doctor and then, from 2000, senior doctor at the Thoraxklinik’s Department of Surgery at Heidelberg University Hospital
- 2013: Chief physician at the Department of Thoracic Surgery at the Lung Clinic Heckeshorn / HELIOS Hospital Emil von Behring.
