Department of Gastroenterology, Hepatology, and Diabetology at Helios Hospital Berlin-Zehlendorf provides the care for patients with acute and chronic diseases of the digestive tract and organs as well as diabetes mellitus. The Diabetes Center has been certified by the German Diabetes Association as it offers the full range of diagnostics and therapeutics for both types of diabetes mellitus.
The hepatology and gastroenterology units work in close cooperation with the Departments of Radiology, Oncology and General, Visceral, and Minimally Invasive Surgery. Under the guidance of Prof. Dr. Med. Eckart Schott, the endoscopic unit offers the full range of endoscopic procedures for both diagnostic and therapeutic purposes, such as endosonographic diagnosis in the upper and lower gastrointestinal tract and endoscopic treatment of Barrett’s esophagus. The medical team also offers lifestyle modification consultation as well as health education for patients to avoid complications.

Prof. Dr. Eckart Schott is an associate professor of hepatology at the Charité Universitätsmedizin Berlin and the vice director of the Dept. of Hepatology and Gastroenterology. He studied medicine at the Ruprecht-Karls Universität Heidelberg and the Freie Universität Berlin, where he graduated in 1997. He received his medical training at the Dept. of Hepatology and Gastroenterology at the Charité Universitätsmedizin Berlin and is board certified in internal medicine and gastroenterology. He was also trained as an immunologist during a postdoctoral stay at Harvard Medical School and leads a research group focusing on the immune regulation in the liver. His habilitation was on the role of T-cells in the pathogenesis of autoimmune and viral liver diseases. He leads the hepatology group at the Department of Hepatology and Gastroenterology, his clinical focus being autoimmune and viral liver diseases as well as hepatocellular carcinoma. He is participating in many clinical studies on viral hepatitis as well as hepatocellular carcinoma.
