Department of General, Visceral, Thoracic, and Transplant Surgery at University Hospital Stuttgart provides the full range of diagnostics and therapeutics for the management of gastrointestinal, thoracic, and endocrine diseases for adult patients. The department is located at both the Catherine Hospital as well as the Bad Cannstatt Hospital where the main focus is directed towards surgical procedures of the pancreas, liver, esophagus, stomach, and colon as well as endocrine surgery. The clinic is a certified Maximum Care Center by both the German Cancer Society and the German Society for General and Visceral Surgery that operates under the management of Prof. Dr med. Jörg Köninger who has been recognized by FOCUS Magazine as one of the best doctors in Germany for Abdominal Surgery. Thanks to the state-of-the-art equipment and the efforts of the medical team, the department is a certified Reference Center for Coloproctology, Bowel Center, Competence Center for Minimally Invasive Surgery, and the second center to be double-certified in Germany for pancreatic surgery. The endocrine surgery unit is certified as a part of the Oncological Center in the Stuttgart Cancer Center (SCC) - Eva Mayr-Stihl Tumor Center. The Obesity Center performs over 600 bariatric interventions every year which makes it one of the most efficient obesity facilities in Germany.
The experienced team of thoracic surgeons carries out the entire spectrum of thoracic procedures, both minimally invasive and open surgeries, with the help of specialists of the Pneumology division of the Clinic for General Internal Medicine. Other relations are also established to ensure optimal care for patients, such as the interdisciplinary cooperation with other specialists of the pancreatic carcinoma center, the intestinal center, the liver center. The Department of General Surgery at the Catherine Hospital, together with the Departments of Urology, and Gynecology, run the Pelvic Floor Center and the Center for Coloproctology. In addition to that, the Department of General Surgery at the Bad Cannstatt Hospital founded the Reflex Center Bad Cannstatt, with the help of the Departments of Gastroenterology and Radiology.
