Department of Surgery at University Hospital Regensburg provides surgical care for patients with acute and chronic diseases of the digestive tract as well as abdominal organs. The department covers the fields of general, visceral, transplant surgery, surgical intensive care, and surgical research and also has a significant focus directed toward tumor treatment as it works in close cooperation with the Departments of Gastroenterology, Oncology, Radiation Therapy, Radiology, and Pathology to ensure patients get the care of specialists in each step of the management plan.
Under the guidance of Prof. Dr. med. Hans-Jürgen Schlitt, the medical team uses the latest scientific findings for pre- and post-treatment care as well as complex surgical procedures, up to organ transplantations, and combined chemotherapy and radiotherapy to treat over 2,000 inpatients every year. The facility has achieved impressive results in the field of organ transplantation as it works closely with nephrologists and gastroenterologists to perform 80 kidney transplants and 50 liver transplants annually.
