Department of Pediatrics

Department of Pediatrics at University Hospital Regensburg provides conservative and surgical care for infants, children, and adolescents with congenital and acquired diseases of various organs. The department is one of the two cornerstones of the Children’s University Hospital East Bavaria that offers a high-level medical service on both an inpatient and outpatient basis. The pediatric intensive care unit has four inpatient rooms and a separate operating theater that are all concerned with the treatment of premature infants and newborns. The staff uses the shock room for acute emergencies as well as diagnostic procedures such as bone marrow biopsy, proximal cardiac venous catheter, and endoscopic examinations.
Under the leadership of Prof. Dr. Med. Michael Melter, the medical team treats over 1,000 inpatients every year, many of which are cancer patients. The facility is a member of the University Transplant Center Regensburg as it offers transplantation surgery of the heart, lungs, liver, and kidneys. The Society for Pediatric Gastroenterology and Nutrition has certified the Center for Liver and Intestinal Diseases for its efforts and success in the field.
