Department of Ophthalmology at University Hospital Regensburg offers both conservative and surgical care for patients with acute and chronic diseases of the eye and orbit. The department has the full range of cutting-edge equipment for both diagnostic and therapeutic purposes for pediatric ophthalmology, strabismus, hereditary orbital, and retinal diseases. The staff also offers the latest techniques and special consultations for cataract surgery, surgical treatment of glaucoma as well as refractive surgery.
Under the leadership of Prof. Dr. Med. Horst Helbig, the facility treats over 3,200 inpatients every year, 650 of which are patients with retinal detachment. The research unit has many basic research projects and clinical trials going on in many fields such as immunotherapies for degenerative eye diseases, epidemiological studies, and retinopathy.
