Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery at University Hospital Regensburg provides surgical care for patients with acute and chronic diseases of the lung and cardiovascular system. Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery at University Hospital Regensburg provides surgical care for patients with acute and chronic diseases of the lung and cardiovascular system. The Lung Cancer Center, established in 2007, is now certified by the German Cancer Society and also a part of the Comprehensive Cancer Center East Bavaria (CCCO) and the University Cancer Center Regensburg. The facility is an ultra-modern department as it's one of the few centers in Germany to offer the hyperthermic intrathoracic chemotherapy for the treatment of mesothelioma and also has achieved impressive results in the fields of surgical treatment of lung cancer, and minimally invasive thoracic procedures, the keyhole surgery.
Under the leadership of Prof. Dr. Med. Christof Schmid, the department treats over 1,300 inpatients every year. The medical staff works in close cooperation with the Department of Neurology of the University Hospital Regensburg to effectively treat mediastinal tumors, such as thymic carcinoma and is also a significant member of the Myasthenia Center that is certified by the German Society.
