Department of Urology
The Department of Urology is directed by Prof. Dr. med. Jürgen Gschwend. The department focuses on surgical operations and drug therapy for urological tumors, Prostate carcinoma, bladder carcinoma, testicular tumors, renal or adrenal cancer, and penile carcinoma. The team of the department also has great expertise in the management of urinary stone disease and minimally invasive urological procedures. The department participates in interdisciplinary collaboration with oncology, radiotherapy, gynecology, nephrology, neurology, pediatrics and endocrinology so as to give patients a more holistic therapy.
The Department of Urology at the Rechts der Isar Hospital has been certified since 2011 by DEKRA and the European Board of Urology. This ensures high-quality training of specialist doctors and a more refined treatment process. In addition, the department is a partner of the Roman Herzog Comprehensive Cancer Center (RHCCC), a certified prostate cancer center and one of the top centers for testicular tumors in Germany.
The department has its own operating theatres, radiological department and two stations with a total of 57 beds and rooms equipped with telephone, television, and bathroom. They have been working since 2009 with robot-assisted surgery (da Vinci surgical robot). As a minimally invasive procedure, that has numerous advantages for the patient and the physician. It causes less pain, faster recovery and increased precision compared to conventional open surgery.
