The focuses of the Department of Psychosomatic Medicine and Psychotherapy at Rechts der Isar hospital are the interactions between the mental state and physical state and in a broader sense, the psychosocial processes involved in this interaction. The department is under the direction of Prof. Dr. med. Peter Henningsen. Psychosomatic medicine is a medical specialty of its own and deals with the connections between the body and soul, and the treatment of physical disorders due to mental pathologies. In order to take into account various mental and physical disorders that may interact with each other, the department has an experienced team of different medical professionals. The department handles all types of diseases in the psychosomatic field and specializes in the treatment of persistent, unclear and burdensome physical complaints, general mental disorders, physical illness with mental factors and consequences requiring treatment. Up to 50% of their cases include cases of mental disorders manifesting as physical illnesses.
The treatment of psychosomatic diseases of children and adolescents takes place at Schwabing hospital. The Department of Child and Adolescent Psychosomatics is a joint collaboration between Schwabing Hospital and the Rechts der Isar Hospital.
