Department of Nuclear Medicine: Molecular Imaging and Radionuclide Therapy

The Rechts der Isar Department of Nuclear Medicine is headed by Prof. Dr. med. Wolfgang Weber. The medical team consists of five senior physicians and 11 assistant doctors. In addition to that, there are 15 medical technicians (MTA), three PET operators and eleven nurses at the treatment center care to ensure the well-being of their patients.

The department works closely with many other departments and institutes at the Rechts der Isar hospital in an interdisciplinary fashion to ensure optimal healthcare services. They are also part of the Roman Herzog Comprehensive Cancer Centers as a way of ensuring close collaboration with other disciplines. The department of nuclear medicine is in charge of the interdisciplinary thyroid center at the Rechts der Isar hospital.

The department is accredited by the European Neuroendocrine Tumor Society (ENETS) for the diagnosis and therapy of neuroendocrine tumors, and their PET / CT center received the EARL PET / CT accreditation from the European Association of Nuclear Medicine (EANM) in February 2012.

The Department of Nuclear Medicine at Recht der Isar hospital is specialized in:

  • Diagnosis and treatment of benign and malignant thyroid diseases in cooperation with the endocrinology and surgery department. 
  • Detection of tumors such as Bronchial carcinoma (lung cancer), tumors of the lymphatic tissue (lymphoma), black skin cancer (melanoma), and mammary gland cancer (breast cancer)
  • Detection of Prostate cancer
  • Detection of neuroendocrine tumors
  • Diagnosis of cardiovascular diseases
  • Diseases of the nervous system
  • Diagnosis of brain tumors
  • Diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease
  • Diagnosis of some forms of epilepsy
  • Diagnosis of Parkinson's disease

  • Dr. Weber is a graduate of the Medical School of the Technical University of Munich.
  • He was trained in Nuclear Medicine at the Technical University of Munich and joined the Faculty of the Department of Nuclear Medicine at the same university in 2001.
  • From 2004 to 2007, he was an Associate Professor at the Department of Molecular and Medical Pharmacology at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA).
  • In 2007 he was appointed Professor and Chair of the Department of Nuclear Medicine at the University Hospital Freiburg in Germany.
  • In 2013 he returned to the USA and became Chief Physician of the Department of Nuclear Medicine at the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, as well as Professor of Radiology at the Weill Cornell Medical College. He held both positions until the end of 2017.
  • Dr. Weber’s research is focused on molecular imaging of cancer for the planning and monitoring of therapeutic interventions.
  • He is also interested in targeted radionuclide therapy of cancer and theranostics. Dr. Weber has published more than 250 papers in leading scientific journals, including the Journal of Clinical Oncology, PNAS, as well as journals of the Nature series.
  • He has served on the editorial board of several scientific journals, such as the Journal of Nuclear Medicine, European Journal of Nuclear Medicine and Molecular Imaging, Clinical Cancer Research and Journal of Clinical Oncology
