Prof. Dr. Bernhard Meyer

Department of Neurosurgery

The Neurosurgical Department at University hospital Recht der Isar is specialized in the diagnosis and operative treatment of diseases of the brain and spine. The department is run by a team of highly-qualified doctors under the direction of Prof. Dr. med. Bernhard Meyer. The team includes 7 senior doctors, 3 specialists and 17 assistant doctors, who participate in patient-oriented healthcare provision.

The department of Neurology works together with specialists from the entire hospital to give a multidisciplinary approach to healthcare. They are certified as a neuro-oncological center by the German Cancer Society. The department specializes in difficult brain tumors such as gliomas, metastases, skull base tumors, and pituitary tumors. The departments treat about 152 cases of brain cancer and about 118 cases of benign tumors in the meninges of the brain and spinal cord every year and also has high experience in the surgical treatment of spinal injuries and disorders. In addition to that, they treat cases of neuro-oncology, vascular neurosurgery, and pediatric neurosurgery. The doctors of the department have gone on to master some of the most advanced neurosurgery techniques which are in part developed by their own research group. Using computer-aided surgical procedures, the doctors can pinpoint brain and spinal tumors accurately and operate precisely.

The department performs spine surgery services which extend from minimally invasive therapies to motion-preserving techniques to reconstructive surgery using state-of-the-art technologies and implants. They have treated over 281 cases of spinal disorders. The departments of neurosurgery, trauma surgery and orthopedics were certified in Germany in 2016 as the first "Level 1 Spine Center" by the German Spine Society. In addition, the Department of Neurosurgery is an integral part of the interdisciplinary Center for Neurovascular Diseases of the Rechts der Isar Hospital and works closely with neuroradiology in the supply of vascular diseases of the nervous system.

The Neurosurgical Department at University hospital Recht der Isar is specialized in:

  • Surgery of skull base tumors such as meningiomas, clivus chordomas, cerebellar bridging tumors (eg vestibular schwannomas).
  • Microvascular decompression.
  • Surgical treatment of tumors of the pituitary region (pituitary adenomas, acromegaly, Cushing's disease, craniopharyngiomas, para sellar meningiomas).
  • Removal of brain tumors such as gliomas, meningiomas and brain metastases
  • Dynamic, non-stiffening stabilization of the lumbar spine
  • Minimally invasive implantation of dorsal stabilization systems
  • Treatment of degenerative, traumatic, and infectious disease of the spinal cord.
  • Microsurgical removal of tumors within the spinal cord under functional monitoring
  • Minimally invasive, reconstructive operations on the thoracic spine (thoracoscopy)
  • Minimally invasive surgery for herniated discs and constrictions (stenoses) of the cervical, thoracic and lumbar spine
  • Intervertebral disc prosthetics of the cervical spine
  • Kyphoplasties and vertebroplasties: two minimally invasive procedures for the treatment of vertebral fractures, e.g. in osteoporosis or infestation by tumors
  • Treatment of vascular diseases of the brain and spinal cord such as aneurysms and various vascular malformations.
  •  Treatment of Tumors of the brain and spinal cord; trauma; Hydrocephalus; and convulsive disorders in children.
  • Surgical treatment and management of severe pain using methods like Neuromodulation, ablation and Intrathecal drug administration
  • Use of Neuro-implants in the treatment of diseases such as dystonia, essential tremor, and Parkinson's disease.

  • Prof. Meyer studied Medicine at the University of Padua (Italy), University of Erlangen-Nuremberg, as well as had training abroad at the Northwestern University, Chicago, and at the State University of New York in Brooklyn.
  • In 1989, the professor passed the state examination and received his doctorate at the Institute of Human Genetics of the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg. Then he underwent training in neurosurgery in Tübingen, Duisburg, Bonn, Zurich, and the USA.
  • In 1995, Prof. Mayer was recognized as a Medical Specialist in Neurosurgery and appointed a Senior Physician of the Department of Neurosurgery at the University Hospital Bonn.
  • In 1999 he had his habilitation
  • In 2001 became the Professor in Neurosurgery. Since 2006, Prof. Meyer has been heading the Department of Adult and Pediatric Neurosurgery at the University Hospital Rechts der Isar Munich.
