Department of Pediatric Kidney, Liver & Metabolic Diseases and Neuropediatrics

Department of Pediatric Kidney, Liver & Metabolic Diseases and Neuropediatrics at Hannover Medical School provides medical care for infants, children, and adolescents with diseases of the kidneys, liver, endocrine glands, as well as the central and peripheral nervous systems. The staff works in close cooperation with the Kidney Center for Children and Adolescents at Hannover Medical School as well as the Pediatric Surgery Department for the treatment of congenital anomalies of the kidneys and urinary tract. As a certified center for the ultrasound training of doctors by the DEGUM, the German Society of Medical Ultrasound, the facility is fully equipped with the latest diagnostics and therapeutics.
Under the guidance of Prof. Dr. Med. Dieter Haffner, the medical team, of experienced specialists, experts, and nurses, treats nearly 1,400 inpatients every year. The research groups participate in basic experimental research and clinical studies as well as health services research. The main focus of the research activity is kidney failure, in terms of causes and prevention as well as organ replacement therapy and kidney transplantation.
