Department of Pediatric Cardiology and Pediatric Intensive Care

Department of Pediatric Cardiology and Pediatric Intensive Care at Hannover Medical school is the largest department of this kind in Germany. The department’s diagnostic and therapeutic means are constantly being upgraded to the latest and most advanced to ensure the correct diagnosis and treatment for all diseases of children’s hearts.
The focus is on the treatment of children with congenital heart diseases and organ failure. The staff of the department is also involved in the preparation and aftercare of children with organ transplants (heart, lung, liver, and kidney) and the care of children after major pediatric and neurosurgical interventions and life-threatening injuries.
Under the leadership of Pro. Dr. Med. Philipp Beerbaum the department treats nearly 1,200 children with congenital heart diseases of which 150 patients are with the ventricular septal defects and 75 are with the congenital defects of large arteries. 
The department also focuses on the diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up of children and adolescents with heart failure and life-threatening congenital heart diseases. Intensive Care Unit (Station 67) of Hannover Medical school is the largest pediatric care unit in Germany. It has 18 advanced, fully equipped beds for artificial ventilation. Doctors and staff provide care for children in this unit in a kind but professional way for the full spectrum of heart diseases.

Department of Pediatric Cardiology and Pediatric Intensive Care at Hannover Medical school is specialized in:

  • Prof. Dr. med. Philipp Beerbaum studied medicine at the University of Cologne. There he has also completed an internship in the field of pediatric and adolescent medicine.
  • In 1996, he stopped working at the Heart and Diabetes Center NRW in Bad Oeynhausen and continued his education in the field of pediatric cardiology and pediatric intensive care.
  • Since 2001, he has held the position of Senior Physician of the Working Group on the Cardiovascular System MRI and of an interdisciplinary outpatient clinic specializing in the treatment of adults with congenital heart diseases.
  • Since 2002, he has been setting up a network of competent private health care facilities for the treatment of congenital heart diseases. At the same time, he has conducted several multicenter studies.
  • In 2007, Prof. Beerbaum was offered the position of a Senior Lecturer at King's College London (England) in the field of pediatric cardiovascular medicine. At the same time, he received clinical experience as a Pediatric Cardiologist at the Evelina Children's Hospital (London), and also acted as the Head of the Cardiac MRI Section for the diagnostics of congenital heart diseases.
  • In 2011, Prof. Beerbaum worked at the University of Nijmegen (the Netherlands) for a short time
  • In 2012 he was appointed as the Professor of Pediatric Cardiology and Intensive Care at the Hannover Medical School.
  • His main research focuses covers all non-invasive imaging methods in the field of congenital heart defects – computed tomography, magnetic resonance imaging, and echocardiography.
  • Under the direction of Prof. Beerbaum, the Department of Pediatric Cardiology and Pediatric Intensive Care (in cooperation with the Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery) has become one of the largest centers for the treatment of patients with congenital heart defects of all ages in Germany. Prof. Berbaum is interested not only in providing excellent medical care for the patients of his department but also in the expansion of activities in the treatment of adults with congenital heart diseases and in the field of prenatal counseling.
