Department of Nephrology

Department of Nephrology at Hannover Medical School provides care for patients with diseases of the kidneys as well as high blood pressure. The department is composed of 5 stations, each station is fully equipped with state-of-the-art diagnostics and therapeutics which is one of the main reasons for the optimal care offered for each patient. The specialized station for kidney replacement therapy provides hemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis, hemofiltration, hemodiafiltration, and continuous dialysis procedures, such as the pleasure system for patients with kidney failure. Plasmapheresis and immune absorption therapy are also procedures the facility has as main focuses.
Under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Hermann Haller, the medical team treats over 1,800 inpatients there every year. The department is conducting many research projects to gain a better understanding of the pathways diseases develop. For example, projects of molecular and cellular mechanisms of vascular wall damage as well as the molecular mechanisms by which the endothelial barrier function in response to inflammation.
