Department of General, Visceral, and Transplant Surgery at Hannover Medical School provides medical care for patients with internal diseases that require surgical interventions. The department offers the surgical treatment of the full spectrum of diseases of the digestive tract, liver, gallbladder, biliary tract system, and pancreas. The department is considered a center of supramaximal care and is one of the leading centers for transplant surgery. The facility is exceptional in its certifications as a gynecological center, a trauma center, and it's also certified by the German Cancer Society for the treatment of the tumors of the liver, stomach, intestines, pancreas, and esophagus. 
Under the guidance of Prof. Dr. med. Jürgen Klempnauer, the staff treats over 2,070 inpatients every year. As an ultra-modern center with the state-of-the-art equipment needed to successfully perform operations, the medical team uses the LiMAx test with patients with severe liver diseases for many purposes, such as the evaluation of liver functions before a transplant or the monitoring of liver functions afterward. The research unit prioritizes research projects on regenerative medicine & experimental surgery as well as xenotransplantation.
