Department of Dermatology, Allergology and Venereology

The department of Dermatology, Allergology, and Venereology at Hannover Medical school provides treatment for all diseases related to skin. Whether it’s an infectious, allergic, autoimmune or sexually transmitted disease, this department has the most advanced possible means to treat it.  With Prof. Dr. med. Alexander Kapp as the director of this department, it’s considered one of the biggest medical facilities dedicated to dermatology in Germany. With 60 beds, the department treats nearly 2,900 in-patients and more than 15,000 outpatients every year.
The Skin Tumor Center Hannover (HTZH), founded in 2005, is available for the operative and conservative treatment of all skin tumors. About 1,085 patients with skin cancer choose Hannover Medical school for treatments.
Doctors of this department with their comprehensive skills perform about 1700 procedures of radical and extensive excision of diseased tissue on skin and subcutaneous tissue annually. The department has modern and reliable diagnostic tests for allergic diseases. Compatibility tests for implants and dental material are also conducted in this department.

  • Prof. Dr. med. Alexander Kapp is a Chairman and Medical Director of the Department of Adult and Pediatric Dermatology, Allergology, Venereology at the Hannover Medical School. He is known for his work in the field of the pathophysiology of inflammatory skin diseases (atopic dermatitis, psoriasis), his research on neuro-immunological interactions in allergic inflammation and on the role of eosinophilic granulocytes in allergy.

Education and Professional Career

  • Prof. Kapp studied Human Medicine at the University of Heidelberg (from 1974 to 1980)
  • In 1980 received his doctorate with his thesis on T-lymphocyte function in atopic dermatitis. He then spent research fellowships at the University of Heidelberg, the University of Freiburg, and the Max Planck Institute of Immunobiology in Freiburg.
  • After the residency in dermatology at the University of Freiburg, he received board certification in dermatology and allergology in 1987.
  • In 1988, he became Associate Professor for Dermatology and Venereology
  • In 1990 Head of the Section of Allergology and Immunological Diagnostics at the University Hospital Freiburg.
  • Since 1994, he has held the position of Professor, Chairman, and Director of the Department of Adult and Pediatric Dermatology, Allergology, Venereology at the Hannover Medical School.

Scientific Contribution

  • Prof. Kapp worked in the field of in-vitro diagnostics of allergic diseases. However, his main research interest lies in the pathophysiology of inflammatory skin diseases, particularly atopic dermatitis and psoriasis. His main focus in allergy research is in the field of insect allergies and allergic rhinitis, particularly the specific immunotherapy of these diseases, as well as diagnostic and treatment of urticarial. Genetics, diagnostics, and treatment of malignant skin tumors are also in the focus of his scientific work. Dr. Kapp participated in the development of national and European guidelines on allergy. He was clinical investigator in various clinical studies, as well as study director of national and European clinical multicenter studies in the field of dermatology and allergology, as well as conductor and coordinator of various in vitro studies in the field of inflammation research and allergy.
