Department of Cardiothoracic, Transplantation and Vascular Surgery

The Department of Cardiothoracic transplantation and Vascular Surgery of Hannover Medical School is internationally one of the most advanced centers in its field. They provide surgical treatment for all diseases related to the heart and blood vessels. Under the leadership of Prof. Dr. med Axel Haverich, the department has top quality service for treating congenital or acquired valve defects, heart and lung transplant, diseases of blood vessels, heart and lungs.

The department has advanced modern equipment and specialized doctors needed for successful surgeries. It has 5 surgical rooms, 112 normal ward beds, 21 own intensive care units, and 10 IMC beds. With qualified medical staff, they provide care for more than 3,000 inpatients every year. The department has impressive records of the treatment of nearly 350 patients with Angina, 270 patients with Infarction and more than 200 suffering from an aneurysm.

A great focus of this department is transplantation.  Since the introduction of the transplantation program in 1983, the number of transplantation surgeries has been increasing. It has one of the best results in the world with an 89% survival rate for lung transplantation in 1 year and 50% in 10 years. The department is continuously working towards improving treatment methods and coming up with new ones.
