Department of Ophthalmology

Department of Ophthalmology at University Hospital Würzburg provides conservative and surgical care for patients of all ages with diseases of the eye and orbit. The department has the latest diagnostics and therapeutics, and it also follows the latest surgical protocols and techniques for the treatment of various ocular diseases. The offered service is on both an inpatient and outpatient basis through the three outpatient stations as well as three inpatient operating theaters and one outpatient operating room where surgeons perform innovative minimally invasive procedures that improve the outcome and decrease the risk of complications. The facility is also one of the few centers in Germany which has a Cornea Bank for transplantation surgeries.
Under the leadership of Prof. Dr. Med. Jost Hillenkamp, the medical team treats over 5,200 inpatients every year, almost 20% of which is glaucoma patients at different stages. The research unit conducts many projects on topics such as age-related macular degeneration, ophthalmic imaging, and surgeries for glaucoma and retinal diseases. The facility is a certified Center for Pediatric Ophthalmology where the specialized physicians properly manage congenital and acquired pathologies of children.
