Department of Urology at University Hospital RWTH Aachen provides care for patients with kidney, urinary tract and male reproductive system diseases. With Prof. Dr. med. Thomas-Alexander Vögeli as the head of the department, the specialized medical team of 16 doctors and 30 nurses treat more than 1,700 inpatients annually. The main focuses of the department are tumors of kidney and bladder as well as prostate cancer. A special feature of the department that makes it stand out from other hospitals in Germany is its Robotic Surgery unit and its success in the field of prostate cancer. The latest surgical equipment and techniques are offered in this unit and it reduces hemorrhage, pain and recovery time from many operations such as prostate cancer surgical treatment.
The department has a specific unit for Pediatric Urology as the common and dangerous diseases of adulthood are not the same as the ones of childhood. The department has its research team working on tissue engineering for stem cells and artificial urinary bladder. It’s also in cooperation with the Center for Prostate Disease Research and the Urology Departments of Duke University and North Carolina University.
