University Hospital RWTH Aachen

Head of the Department
Prof. Dr. Felix Manuel Mottaghy
Department of Nuclear Medicine
Department of Nuclear Medicine at University Hospital RWTH Aachen provides advanced diagnostics and therapeutics with the help of radioisotopes. Nuclear medicine is mostly used for the diagnosis of thyroid, heart, lung, kidney and abdominal diseases. The department uses PET, PET-CT, and SPECT to ensure the patient is diagnosed accurately and rapidly. Under the guidance of Prof. Dr. med. Felix Manuel Mottaghy, about 2700 inpatients are treated in this department every year.
Thyroid disorders are the main focus of the Nuclear Medicine department. Radioiodine therapy is utilized for the diagnosis of benign and malignant thyroid tumors as well as targeted therapy for damaged cells. It’s also used for synovial mucosal restoration in joint disorders. An important role of nuclear medicine is the diagnosis and treatment of prostate cancer. Using the advanced methods of nuclear medicine, the department also examines the heart by myocardial scintigraphy and this saves time and provides an accurate diagnosis of blood flow disorders. Brain tumor markers and diagnostics are being developed and monitored by this department as well.
The department has a remarkable research team who direct their focus and work towards areas like, tumor metabolism and the blood flow and metabolism of the heart muscle and the central nervous system.
Department of Nuclear Medicine at University Hospital RWTH Aachen is specialized in:
• Radioiodine therapy for benign thyroid disorder
• Radioiodine therapy for malignant thyroid disorder
• Selective Internal radiotherapy
• Peptide receptor radiotherapy
• Prostate cancer therapy with PSMA- targeted radionuclide therapy
