Department of Neurosurgery at University Hospital RWTH Aachen provides surgical care needed by patients with neurological diseases. The department is considered to be the main center for neurosurgical medical service in Aachen. It has main focuses directed towards tumors of the nervous system, neurovascular diseases, spinal neurosurgery, pediatric neurosurgery, and peripheral nerve disorders.
Nearly 1,800 inpatients are treated in this department every year, under the guidance of Prof. Dr. med. H. Clusmann. The department has the Aachen Brain Tumor Center which was established in 2012 as an organ center at the Center of Integrated Oncology Aachen. The department has research activities that are concerned with disease pathways and developing diagnostics and therapeutics.

- 1986 - 1993 Study of Human Medicine at the University of Cologne.
- 1989 - 1993 Experimental Ph.D. thesis at the Institute of Neurophysiology of the University of Cologne (under the supervision of Prof. Dr. med. Uwe Heinemann).
- 1996 Doctoral thesis defense with honors.

- 1994 Intern at the Institute of Neurophysiology, University of Cologne.
- 1994 - 2001 Intern and Assistant Physician in the Department of Neurosurgery at the University Hospital Bonn.
- Board certification in Neurosurgery.
- 2003 Appointment as Senior Physician.
- 2004 Venia legendi in Neurosurgery and the title of PD at the University of Bonn. The subject of the habilitation work: "Differentiated limited resections in the surgical treatment of temporal lobe epilepsy. Research of prognostic factors, chances for the successful treatment outcome and operational risks".
