Department of Pediatric Surgery at University Hospital Mannheim provides surgical care for infants, children, and adolescents with congenital and acquired diseases of various organs. The department has been recognized by FOCUS Magazine as one of the best facilities in the field of pediatric surgery in Germany. The department is a part of the Children’s Center of University Hospital Mannheim and has the main focus directed towards children's traumatology, pediatric urology, pediatric hand surgery, and pediatric plastic surgery. The department is equipped with state-of-the-art diagnostics and therapeutics such as basal stimulation and physical therapy and it is a center with the certification of European Reference Network and a Center of Excellence for children.
Under the leadership of Prof. Dr. med. Lucas Wessel, the department treats over 2,500 inpatients every year. The research unit of the department is conducting many research projects in areas such as thermal injuries, scar therapy, diaphragmatic hernia as well as fractures in children (AFIC Study).
