Department of Neurology
Department of Neurology at University Hospital Mannheim provides care for patients with acute and congenital diseases of the central and peripheral nervous systems. The department is in close cooperation with the Departments of Neurosurgery, Neuroradiology, and Cardiology. The department mainly focuses on the treatment of diseases such as stroke, multiple sclerosis, brain tumors, epilepsy, and movement disorders such as Parkinson’s disease. The department is also a member of the Center for Rare Diseases and also has a specialized Stroke Competence Center which is one of the largest and most specialized stroke centers in Europe which has 29 beds where over 1,000 patients are treated annually.
Under the guidance of Prof. Dr. med. Michael Platten, the department treats over 2,000 inpatients every year. The department has a specialized clinic for speech therapy where an experienced team of doctors treats patients with acquired voice, speech, and swallowing disorders. In the Mannheim Epilepsy Center, patients with seizure disorders have the most advanced diagnostics and therapeutics that ensures their optimal care.
