Department of Pediatric Diabetology at University Hospital Mainz provides care to infants, children, and adolescents with both types of diabetes mellitus as well as complications of the disease. The department has the latest, most advanced therapeutic equipment and techniques to ensure each patient is getting the optimal care for their condition.
Under the guidance of Prof. Dr. Med. Dorothee Kieninger-Baum, the department takes special pride in its insulin pump therapy. Implantation of insulin pumps that imitate the pancreatic function of secreting insulin when needed along with the health education and nutritional recommendation to the patient is offered by the specialist of the department. The department is also in cooperation with other departments to treat adverse effects of diabetes on other organs, for example, it’s in cooperation with the Department of Ophthalmology for the treatment of diabetic retinopathy for long-standing uncontrolled diabetic patients.
