Department of Ophthalmology

Department of Ophthalmology at University Hospital Mainz provides care for patients with diseases affecting the eye and orbit. The department is nationally and internationally recognized as one of the best centers for ophthalmology. The department is equipped with the most advanced diagnostics and therapeutics as well as surgical techniques to ensure the patients are provided with optimal care. The department consists of 4 stations with a bed count of 74 beds where over 6,600 inpatients are treated every year.
Under the guidance of Prof. Dr. Med. Norbert Pfeiffer, the department mainly focuses on retinal diseases, refractive surgical correction, glaucoma, corneal diseases, neuro-ophthalmology and cataract. The department has a Glaucoma Center Mainz where over 1200 operations on glaucomatous patients are performed each year. The department also has a research unit that consists of a center for experimental ophthalmology, Center for Ophthalmic Epidemiology and Health Service Research, Clinical Research Center and biomaTiCS.
