Department of Neurology

Department of Neurology at University Hospital Mainz provides care for patients with diseases of the central and peripheral nervous systems. The department consists of a Stroke Unit and a General Neurological Ward where patients are offered the optimal care for their cases. The department focuses on the management and treatment of multiple sclerosis, stroke, epilepsy, peripheral neurology, Parkison’s disease, vertigo and tumors of the nervous system.
Under the guidance of Prof. Dr. med. Frauke Zipp, the department treats about 4,000 inpatients every year, 800 of which are directed towards the stroke unit for various types of blood vessel occlusions in the brain. The department is certified by the German Multiple Sclerosis Association and it is also a Center of Competence for Parkison’s disease. The research unit of the department works towards developing the diagnostics and therapeutics of neurology as well as exploration the pathophysiology of some diseases such as Parkison’s disease.
