Department of Gastroenterology and Hepatology

Department of Gastroenterology and Hepatology at University Hospital Mainz provides care for patients with diseases of the gastrointestinal tract and liver. The department focuses on the treatment of esophageal, stomach and colon cancer along with chronic inflammatory bowel diseases as well as hepatobiliary system diseases. The department is in close cooperation with the Department of General, Abdominal and Transplantation Surgery and together they offer liver transplantation with pre- and post-operative care. 
Under the guidance of Prof. Dr. Med. Peter Galle, the department treats more than 1,200 inpatients every year, most of which suffer from liver diseases. The department has Cirrhosis Center Mainz where patients with complex diseases and complications of liver cirrhosis can get the optimal care offered by the exceptional medical team who have the latest, most advanced equipment at their disposal.
