Department of Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery at University Hospital Mainz is considered to be one of the best medical facilities of its kind in Germany, according to FOCUS Magazine. The department provides surgical care for patients with diseases of the heart, blood vessels and lungs. It holds a pioneering position for introducing the latest therapeutic techniques. The department is supplied with the cutting-edge equipment for modern surgical interventions such as minimally invasive procedures of coronary artery bypass as well as aortic valve surgery. 
Under the guidance of Prof. Dr. Med. Christian-Friedrich Vahl, the department treats more than 2,000 inpatients every year, about 500 of which are patients of ischemic heart disease. Dr. Vahl is a well-recognized surgeon who is considered to be one of the best surgeons in Germany in his specialization according to the special survey of patients as well as FOCUS Magazine. The department has a special focus directed towards aneurysms as well as heart valve reconstruction.

  • Prof. Dr. med. Christian-Friedrich Vahl studied medicine, art history, philosophy, and sociology. After studying medicine (1975 - 1981), he was an Intern at the University Hospital Göttingen and Heidelberg. Dr. Vahl was a Fellow of the Studienstiftung des Deutschen Volkes.
  • Then, he completed a one-year study at the Complutense University of Madrid (1979 - 1981).
  • In 1986, he defended his doctoral thesis and received the title of Doctor of Medicine.
  • From 1981 to 1984, the doctor underwent the initial scientific training at the Institute of Physiology, University of Hamburg.
  • Later he underwent clinical training at the German Heart Center Munich and at the Augsburg Clinic. There he worked on the project "Quality Assurance in Cardiac Surgery".
  • In 1988, Dr. Vahl began working at the University Hospital Heidelberg, where he was had his habilitation (1995).
  • Since 2004, he has been holding the position of Head of the Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery at the University Hospital Mainz.
  • In 2002, he was appointed as a Visiting Professor at the University of Heidelberg.
