Department of Visceral, Transplant, Thoracic, and Vascular Surgery at University Hospital Leipzig covers almost the entire spectrum of surgery of the internal organs, especially the abdominal and chest areas, as well as the vessels.
The visceral surgery unit is mainly concerned with the treatment of diseases of the abdominal cavity, the abdominal wall, the endocrine glands as well as soft tissue. It has an established center called Center for Hereditary Colorectal Cancer and has been also recognized and certified by the German Cancer Society. The unit is headed by Prof. Dr. Med. Ines Gockel and is considered as one of the 3 certified centers of excellence in Germany to offer minimally invasive and robotic surgery for tumors.
The hepatobiliary surgery and visceral transplantation unit treats diseases of the liver, biliary tract, and gallbladder and carry out transplants of the liver, kidney, and pancreas. The unit is headed by Prof. Dr. med. Daniel Seehofer has the main focus directed towards the treatment of cancer of the gastroesophageal tract and liver.
The department also has a unit specialized in thoracic surgery which is under the leadership of Prof. Dr. med. Matthias Steinert and is in cooperation with the University Lung Center where measures for prevention, early diagnosis, effective treatment and follow-up for diseases such as lung cancer are the main concerns.
The vascular unit of the department consists of the Departments of Angiology, Vascular Surgery, and Diagnostic and Interventional Radiology and works in close cooperation with the Departments of Neurology, Cardiology, and Nephrology. The unit performs over 3,000 percutaneous vascular interventions, 800 vascular surgical operations, and implants nearly 250 aortic stent-grafts annually under the guidance of Dr. medic. Daniela Branzan. The unit also is equipped with the latest surgical techniques and equipment as it has a hybrid room where vascular interventions and angiographic catheter interventions are performed and the Da Vinci robotic system is used.
