Department of Neurology

Department of Neurology at University Hospital Leipzig provides care for patients with diseases of the central and peripheral nervous systems as well as muscle diseases. The main focuses of the department are the treatment of stroke, movement disorders, dementias, inflammatory diseases of the nervous system, muscle diseases and diseases of the myelin sheaths. The department works in cooperation with the Department of Neurosurgery, specialists of the University Hospital as well as nearby colleagues and hospitals. The department is certified by the German Society of Muscle Diseases due to its high success rate in the treatment of muscular disorders. The clinic is also composed of an intensive care unit, stroke special ward, epilepsy monitoring unit, general wards, a unit for neurological ultrasonography and another for clinical neurophysiology.
Under the guidance of Prof. Dr. med. Joseph Claßen, the department treats about 2,400 inpatients every year, more than 800 of which are stroke patients. The research unit of the department has priorities in their research projects such as motor function and plasticity, language and aphasia, stroke, neuroimmunology as well as myelin sheath diseases.

The Department of Neurology at University Hospital Leipzig is specialized in the diagnosis and treatment of:
